We are a group of health care professionals coming from a wide variety of backgrounds. Members of the group, including physician, nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacist, social workers, software engineers and volunteers, are working in the tertiary education sector or in health care agencies. In spite of the diversity in our background, the group shares the common goal of further enhancing the quality of dementia care in Hong Kong.
The use of ginkgo biloba extract as natural therapies for Alzheimer's disease received increasing attention over the past few years. Ginkgo biloba is a long-living ancient tree that has strong resistance to city pollution, insects and viruses. The values of ginkgo biloba extract on improving blood circulation and oxygen to the brain, promoting memory clarity and short-term memory have been widely discussed in the literature (Le Bars et al., 1997; Wong et. al., 1998). Being health care professionals working in different fields of dementia care, we wish to adopt the characteristics of the Ginkgo tree to be a strong and long-living group that promotes the circulation of information and knowledge to different groups of people who are interested in dementia care. And this explains why we adopt GINKGO as the name of this group, whose ultimate goal is to enhance the quality of dementia care in Hong Kong.
