Assisting in Daily Living Activities

Although elderly people with dementia have different levels of cognitive function, they are capable of performing self-care activities to a certain extent. Therefore, even if/when an elderly person demonstrates slow movement, he should be encouraged to carry out his daily living tasks as much as possible, provided that the task requirements fall within his level of ability. By doing so, the skills and confidence of the person with dementia can be enhanced. To further promote performance, caregivers should give reinforcement and assistance at appropriate times.

The following are some common problems encountered by people with dementia in real-life situations; some suggestions are also given for consideration:

a) Bathing & Dressing
b) Eating
c) Walking & Movement
d) Toileting
