Sensory-based Activities

This is a relatively new method of therapy, and its effectiveness is subject to controversy. Sensory-based activities aim to achieve their therapeutic goals by providing different sensory inputs to elderly clients. They include using different equipment, materials and even environment to stimulate the clients' senses of sight (vision), hearing (audition), touch (haptic senses), smell (olfaction) and taste (gustation).

Sense of Sight (Vision)
  • People with dementia maybe taken to sit in a special room. In it, they can view water pillars with changing colors or lights with changing shapes and colors.
Sense of Hearing (Audition)
  • Listening to music is a frequently used hearing activity. Music can be light and touching, filled with the atmosphere of nature, or the masterpieces of famous composers.
  • In addition, elderly clients can be given some familiar sounds to listen to, such as the noises of cars, hawkers in a market, etc.
Sense of Touch (Haptic Senses)
  • Vibration, a sense of coldness and hotness, and the textures of different materials can be used to stimulate the patient.
  • Massage can also stimulate the haptic senses of the elderly.
Sense of Smell (Olfaction)
  • Concerning the senses of smell and taste, fragrant oil is more popular and has been commonly used recently. By applying the properties of different fragrant oils, the goals of therapy are achieved.
  • Provide the elderly with familiar objects such as medicinal oil and food, to arouse their olfactory memory and provide a pleasant feeling.
  • Provide the elderly with different flavored food to try.
